Cape Woolamai is the highest point of Phillip Island. The small town was given its name by George Bass while on a whale boat voyage in 1978. The name is an Aboriginal word which came from the Eora people of Port Jackson. Woolamai was the name of a snapper fish which the Eora people would catch.

The cape itself is a vision of natural beauty. Pink granite rises out of the water gently easing into the green mainland of Phillip Island. The area is also home to a large colony of Shear-tailed Shearwaters. Many native Australian fauna call Cape Woolamai home. Walking tracks will show you the area and visitors are encouraged to explore to experience the true Phillip Island.

    Cape Woolamai Trail

The sandy track winding along the sheer cliff tops on Phillip Island's southerly point culminates in a superb panorama of the island. Watch out for the daring surfers on nearby Woolamai Surf Beach, and keep an eye open for the burrows of the short-tailed shearwaters (mutton birds), small migratory birds that fly to Alaska each April.
