The Empyre Boutique Hotel evokes grandeur and an understated elegance of a bygone era not seen in Castlemaine since the gold rush.

Although built as the Albion hotel in 1860, its current transformation has produced a timeless and sophisticated hotel that is classic european inspiration. Furnished with stunning antique French and Asian pieces that adorn every level of the hotel, you will  marvel at how they sit harmoniously side by side with modern amenities that we have come to expect today.

Just six luxurious rooms all named after different aspects from the hotel’s past, create an intimate travel destination, where you may relax and unwind.

The Hotel’s café, lounge, restaurant and private dinning room further enhance your visit to Castlemaine as a “foodies” sanctuary.

Relax, take time to unwind and enjoy the unspoilt beauty of Castlemaine and its surrounding villages. Or use the Hotel as a base to explore the many regional towns and their offerings that are with in 30 minutes of the Empyre.

Accommodation
'The Empyre offers six beautifully furnished suites, a cafe / restaurant, a lounge area and a private dinning room. Chandeliers and mirrors abound. Attention to detail is what The Empyre is all about. Customers will experience an intimate and friendly environment from the moment they step into the building.
All six suites are magnificently appointed and feature majestic original French provincial furniture from the opulent era of the 1800s: stately wooden beds, armoirs and gilt mirrors.

Each suite is a work of artful antiquity yet offers contemporary amenities, LCD TV, ADSL point, daily newspaper, DVD player, telephone and private bathroom with mosaic tile features.

The original front bar with its stunning lead light windows, now forms the bar and part of the dining areas of the Empyre.

The Albion  :  Named after the original hotel, the Albion suite offers a beautiful French empire queen bed decorated with rosewood, birdseye and ebony.

This bed sits comfortably with a marble and gilt side table, louis xvi arm chairs and french armoire. If that’s not enough to take your breath away relax in the deep bath of the modern mosaic tiled ensuite or sit on the huge sofa in front of the marble fireplace with a gas log fire and watch the LCD television one of two TV’s in this suite.

If all thats all too much you may lay on the bed and marvel at the Flemish crystal chandeliers or sit at the table and chairs on the balcony overlooking Mostyn Street.

The Empyre  :  The Empyre suite named to repesent the best we have to offer is one of the two premier balcony rooms on the 1st floor. With its magnificent baronial king bed, matching side tables and armoire be tranported back to a time when you may be called the gentry of the manor.

Marble fire place with gas log fire , split system heating and cooling, cyrstal chandelier ,marble ensuite with double shower recess , large sofa , coffee table and breakfast table and chairs make up the living space, not to mention the large balcony overlooking Mostyn street where you may sit and watch Castlemaine.

Garden Suite  :  The Garden suite is situated at the rear of the hotel on the ground floor adjacent to the car parking and walled gardens

The Garden suite is fitted with original French queen size bed , bedside tables and armoire, ensuite with large shower recess, separate toilet, split system heating and cooling to room, breakfast table two chairs , 3 person sofa plus arm chair.

Maguire Suite  :  John Maguire was the original builder of the Empyre Hotel originally called the Albion hotel, first licensed on 16th December 1860. We have honoured his foresight with the Maguire room.

Being our smallest room it still has space for an original queen size French bed with matching marble topped bedside tables, single door French armoire, breakfast table and two chairs, LCD TV and 2 person sofa. Modern ensuite with mosaic glass tiles and porcelain tiles compliment the large shower recess and modern fixtures.

Malherbe Suite  :  The Malherbe suite has been named after Paul Malherbe the builder who helped bring this building back to life. Paul and his team of builders spent one and half years restoring the building.

An antique French bedroom suite adorns this room. Queen bed, side tables, mirrored dresser and armoire all part of an original suite help decorate this room tinged with red accessories. The bright red and black asian side table also adds a touch of the orient.

A separate sitting room with LCD TV creates a cosy area to put your feet up and relax.

Temperance Suite  :  The Hotel was at one stage reincarnated as a temperance hotel giving a note of sobriety to the hotels past.

Today we do allow guests to par take in a wee drop in their rooms even the Temperance suite.

This suite has the unique feature of having matching twin antique French double beds and armoire. Ideally set up for persons sharing a room or family members requiring more than one bed.

This room has ensuite with large shower recess and separate toilet, 2 person sofa plus arm chair, breakfast table two chairs and split system heating and cooling to room.

Castlemaine Art Gallery & Historical Museum is located at the western end of Lyttleton Street. The Castlemaine Art Gallery has focussed on Australian art since it was founded in 1913 and has an impressive collection of Australian Impressionists including McCubbin, Roberts and Streeton. In the basement below the art gallery is the Castlemaine Historical Museum. It has a significant collection of objects and artefacts relating to the history of the area; and includes a fine collection of porcelain, gold- and silverware.

The Restorer’s Barn in Mostyn Street is an Aladdin's Cave of old treasures; it has a vast and fantastic assortment of fabulous stuff! You can easily browse for an hour or more; or you may search for and find just the thing you need for that renovation project.

The Castlemaine Rod Shop is the street rod centre of Castlemaine and Castlemaine is the ‘Street Rod Centre of Australia’.

Drummond Body Care, just opposite the Restorer’s Barn in Mostyn Street is this specialist purveyor of natural soaps and cosmetics. The shop has a fascinating display of products and is somewhat overwhelming! We try to get our soaps and bath salts from here for our guests and for home.
