Environment
The owners have ensured the cabin development did not adversely impact on the fragile and sensitive nature of the coastal dune environment.
Negative impacts were minimized by:

• Providing environmentally sensitive designs in empathy with the site.
• Limiting disturbance to areas to be occupied by construction only.
• Replacing all topsoil, grass and vegetation to prevent degradation of the fragile ecology and to protect the excavated dune area from erosion.
• Conserving soil moisture by the use of seaweed and other mulches.
• Retaining all native vegetation, plus additional planting of trees and shrubs to create further screening and camouflage the site.
• Ensuring that external colours of the cabins complemented the foliage.
• Leaving the site clean and tidy and all timber off-cuts, rubbish and surplus building materials removed, to minimized pollution.
• Placing all services to the cabins underground to prevent unsightly poles.
• For energy conservation, commercial gas is used for instantaneous hot water, heating and cooking.
• Rainwater is collected and delivered by electric pump to each cabin.  Plugs are fitted to all basins and dual flush toilets installed.
• Floor and window vents are used in the ecocabins. Solar blinds also absorb excessive heat during the day.
• Vegetated areas and wildlife corridors have been created to encourage bio diversity with the assistance of Landcare and Natural Heritage Grants.
• An efficient waste management system involves the recycling of all bottles and composting of vegetable matter.
• Natural, non-animal fat, eco-toiletries are used.
• Cleaning materials and multiple use toiletries are purchased in bulk.
• Only bleach free, non-toxic, biodegradable detergents are used.

Guest Experiences On Property

Collect wild Pacific oysters from the rocks at low tide, swim in the crystal clear waters of West Inlet, cast a line off the point – don’t forget to bring your fishing tackle.

Spot the white-breasted sea eagles hunting at low tide and identify the shorebirds with binoculars and fields guides. Many endemic and migratory bird species habit the tidal inlet, sclerophyll forest and wildlife corridors of the property. A full inventory of species is provided to keen bird watchers and short courses for beginners are available during the summer.

West Inlet is a whale stranding area with many sperm and Southern Right whales buried along the shoreline. A recent stranding of pilot whales occurred in November 2008, on the seven-mile beach opposite.

In Spring, hear the calls of the striped marsh, tree and pobblebonk frogs.

Natural Heritage funding has preserved the habitat of the rare striped marsh frog on the property and West Inlet farm has one of the last Tasmanian wetlands where the frog can still be heard. Marsupials on the property include antechinus, eastern-barred bandicoot, Tasmanian devil, white-footed dunnart, ringtail and brush-tail possum, spotted quoll and wallaby.

Ask your hosts to show you the Maine-Anjou cattle, the only registered herd of this French breed in Tasmania and one of the few in Australia.

Explore the 1.5km coastal nature trail, (see property map in the guest compendium) and return via West Inlet beach, or continue on into Stanley. With prior arrangements, the courtesy vehicle will collect you from town.
